Pearl Lake, South Beliot, IL August 14 to August 18, 2019

This stop was only made to divide the trip up. I wanted just a couple-hour drive and this area turned out to be it. South Beliot is just across the Wisconsin border, and seems to be the poorer cousin to Beliot, Wisconsin. But they did have a body of water so I figured it was an OK place to stop. I figured once we hit Illinois we’d be in city after city. Wrong! Although this area was city, all the roads going out went through farm land.

Pearl Lake was a private Lake. Interesting, in that it is the major scuba diving lake for this area. They actually have a plane, car and bus in the water so divers have something to look at. Problem is the divers I spoke to said the visibility was only a few feet, so I guess it’s more feeling what’s there than seeing.

Farm Breakfast

In one of our drives we found a unique place for breakfast: a working farm actually serving food. They started this a while ago just trying to survive an economic down turn in the community. They added onto the barn and presto— it is now a little restaurant. If your queasy about being around farm animals, this may not be the place for you. The food wasn’t spectacular, but they are known for a homemade treat called Duck Butt Muffin. It was made with fresh duck eggs. It was big, moist and full of fresh blueberries, topped off with a light brandy icing. WOW!

We figured the sausage would be fresh.

This area wasn’t one of our favorites, but we always seem to find something cool about every place we visit. We wanted to make a Costco run but rather than take the freeway we decided to take the two-lane country road for 60 miles. We drove through corn fields on both sides of the road that were higher than our car. We went through several small towns with “cute” main streets– many old homes that were beautifully maintained. No “cookie cutter” housing tracts around here. It was a beautiful and relaxing journey to Costco.

Not much else going on here. Did some hanging out at the motor home. Got some work done and took a few more drives. The campground was just okay – lots and lots of rules, but rules that we were OK with.

After 4 restful days, we were ready for out next stop.
