Lake Powhatan, Asheville, NC September 4 to September 9, 2019

Our drive to Lake Powhatan Recreational Area went smoothly – only 4 hrs but in my new desire about 1 hr too long. But an easy drive through low mountains and tons of green trees. Arrived at the campground with a surprise – when I made to reservations evidently I made 1 with electric hookups and 1 without. Being the idiot that did this, I insisted our friends take the electric one. This was our first “boon docking” site. Not really an issue except it was still very warm and humid, and we were not allowed to run the generator after 8 PM (and they were at my rig at 10 after when I did run it late trying to cool the rig down). Our concern was more for the cat, but we were able to work it out and we all did well.

Dad – or is that Santa Claus?

The reason for coming here was Tennille’s (my niece) wedding.and as it turns out, a family reunion. My Dad (95 yrs old) and his wife Trudy flew in, along with my brother Dave and his wife Vivian. Then Rick and Jill brought their 5th wheel in and we were here. Step sister Michelle couldn’t make it, but it was really great to see everyone else. My sister Sharon and her husband Randy moved here a few years ago and seem to love it (I did hear a few suggestions that we all move here). The wedding had 4 days of events – a family get together where we got to meet David’s (the groom) family, the wedding itself (a small family affair) at my other niece Erin’s new home, then the big reception with all their friends and families, then finally a Sunday Brunch at the Omni Resort where we all said goodbye. Kept us all busy but still had time to visit and enjoy each other.

North Carolina is very beautiful, and Asheville is a cool town. Problem is the roads I think were built in 1776 and not widened since then. The two lane country roads were nice but not really easy to maneuver. There was quite a bit of traffic, especially in Asheville. As my sister says, that’s why you quickly learn about the back roads. Hurricane Dorian was off the North Carolina coast, but we were far enough inland that we didn’t get any weather from it at all (not even rain).

Event Center for Reception

The Reception took place at an Event Center in Asheville. It was beautiful! It was nice to meet and have conversations with some of Sharon and Randy’s friends as well as friends of Tennille and David.

From here we are headed west again. We have to be in Albuquerque for the Balloon Festival by October 2, so it’s time to head out. With our spending a few night in most places, we are on a schedule. Sure make us wonder what it would be like to travel without a schedule. Some day….
