Happy Birthday Marsha! We spent her birthday traveling, but again a fairly short drive. This part of the country is so vast – open skies, rolling hills, green pastures, tons of flowers. It’s a joy to drive through it.

Devil’s Monument is our Country’s first National Monument. You can see it for miles as the area is pretty flat. The Indian story is a bear was chasing two sisters and scratched the tower causing the streaks you can see on it. Sure makes sense when you look at it. We are camping right at the base of it. There is only 1 road in, the road goes three miles to a visitor center at the base, then back out. We are here over a weekend, and the line of cars to enter is ridiculous. We are glad we’re staying here so we can go later in the day when traffic slows. Seems like a lot of people just come for the day.

Devil’s Tower from our camp ground

We drove to Sundance, Wy – not of the Film Festival fame. We went on Saturday and except for the Harley dealership and a couple of bars, the entire town was shut down. Nice drive and I did find a T shirt I liked at the Harley dealership.

Another day we headed the other direction to Hulett (population 416) and Aladdin (population 50). Hulett has a country club area with gorgeous, expensive summer homes. Surprised us, but if you can afford it why not. Very scenic area, old historic town. While we were in Aladdin we kept hearing the Deliverance music.

Stay in a Tepee (if you want)

As Sturgis Bike week gets closer, you see more and more business getting ready to open for the 100,000 bikers that will soon will be here. Even now, we see lots of Harley’s on these back roads. Makes Marsha and I miss our bike.

Ever night the KOA here shows the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” since it was filmed right here. It’s kind of cool to see the movie outdoors with the Tower in the back ground. The night I went there was tons of lightening flashing all around the sky – the kind in the movie where space ships are hiding. I keep looking for little green men but alas, none so far.

Hiking around the base of the Tower

Again been very nice to have 5 days here. Lots of relaxing, quiet time but able to explore too. We live in a remarkable country.
