I am getting spoiled with this type of drive – 2 hrs and we’re there. Mostly Interstate but still very green and beautiful scenery. I have been looking forward to being back in Buffalo. Marsha and I stopped here two years ago because we had just finished binge watching the TV show Longmire. The books and show take place in a town that that is based on Buffalo (although filmed in Las Vegas, New Mexico). The KOA here is right on Clear Creek and we really enjoyed our time here. This time was no exception.

Breakfast at the Busy Bee (Overflow in to the Occidental Hotel)

I think we got the last two sites. Our site did not have any shade trees, but we were very close to the creek. Longmire week starts July 18 (our last day here) so it was getting crowded. Every year they have Longmire week where the author and some of the actors come and …. well I really don’t know what they do, but it’s a big deal in town. I guess you can pay money to hear them speak.

Our favorite thing to do here is to take our morning coffee down by the creek. They have tables and swings set up along the creek, but we seem to be the only ones down there. So beautiful to sit and listen to the water. It’s a great way to start our day.

The Powderhorn mountains are just west of town. One of our favorite drives is to Crazy Woman Canyon. It’s about 45 minutes our of town but one of the prettiest canyons you can drive through. Very narrow dirt road and rushing creek along side the road. I didn’t have to use the 4 wheel drive but was glad to have it. The story of Crazy Woman is bizarre as you might guess – girl left home at 13, pretended she was a man and worked as a fur trader and mountain man, fought battles, mauled by bears, bitten by a rattlesnake, faced wolfs, became a woman and was raped and left for dead. But lived to be 100 and and is a story of true grit.

We went to the Briton museum about 30 minutes from Buffalo. Out in the middle of no where but they did a nice job with a very modern building to display various arts, and the original house and grounds of this family. Well attended despite being on no main path. The local museum in town was pretty cool too. More of the local history and homesteading info. A pharmacist took his own collection and started the museum, but many others have contributed. We love learning about local history. Buffalo is a cool older town. The buildings have been kept up and some of the hotels and businesses from the early 1900’s are still in use. The fact that the creek flows right through the middle of town is pretty cool too – at least now, in 1912 it flooded the town and caused tons of damage.

We seem to be continuing our routine: get up (moving slowly), coffee outside, work for a bit, then go explore the area. We tried a few local restaurants and of course the ice cream stand was a hit. We had 6 days here and it is so nice to just have time and not be rushed.

Happy Birthday to Marsha, The Best Gift I Ever Got!
